WHAT IS THE GOAL OF TRASH LESS TALK?

THE GOAL OF ‘TRASH LESS TALK’ IS TO OPEN UP A SPACE TO DISCUSS, QUESTION, AND CHALLENGE IDEAS OF SUSTAINABILITY.

I want to investigate what the word sustainability means, in regards to the environment, human health, animal health, and the way we live. According to Merriam Webster, sustainability is “a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged.” Sustainability is a way of living that requires a cyclical method of reusing items and limiting the amount of waste produced because everything should be able to be reused again and again. Our resources and items are valuable and it is important to think about this value and to not make things disposable.

I want to question the fashion industry, beauty industry, and lifestyle industry. Some topics I will explore include human rights, fair wages, sustainable materials, consumer outreach, and education. I also want to incorporate fun posts such as thrifting guides, and information on my favorite sustainable brands and items. The most important aspect of my blog is asking ‘But Why?’ The ‘5 Whys Technique’ involves asking ‘But Why’ 5 times, in order to get to the root upstream cause of a problem. I think this technique will come in very handy when discussing sustainability topics.

As a Public Health major during my undergrad, I learned about how health (mental, physical, and spiritual health) is interconnected with your surroundings. An individual’s thoughts and behaviors about health are influenced by how they are raised, their social network, environment, work place, and what is important to them. To solve a public health issue, one must connect with individuals and learn about how they live their lives and how they view their problem and possible solutions. I'm hoping that this blog will create an open dialogue of what my thoughts and influences are, as well as a space where readers can share what is important to them, whether they disagree or agree with my thoughts. I've also found that not many people in my life are interested in talking about sustainability, so I am excited to meet new people with similar interests and to have great passionate conversations.

Talk to you soon,
